My fibroids journey

I had my first fibroid at the age of 23. Within the couple of months, the lump grew outside of my womb to the size of large grapefruit, and I opted for surgery, the only option available on NHS then. It took me few weeks to recover and left me with a big noticeable scar across low part of my stomach.

On followed up scan, I was informed that I had 15 more tiny fibroids in my womb and was reassured that there is nothing to worry about as fibroids might never grow or bother me.

When I hit 40, all fibroids started growing all at once. It felt like my body turned against me. The largest outside fibroid was 10 cm and the largest inside was 6cm. I was in permanent discomfort and stress.

I was very nervous of surgery as this time fibroids were not just outside by inside of the womb, as the idea of cutting into my womb did not sit well with me.

I prayed to God to find the best surgeon for fibroids in UK. The name of Dr. Nigel Hacking appeared in several searches, from voted in Daily Mail by medical professionals as one of the best ten surgeons for fibroids in the country to testimonies from his grateful patients on Google search.

I booked an appointment, had my MRI scan done and started to feel really positive, as Dr Nigel Hacking was very professional, reassuring, encouraging, and I felt in the safe hands.

The procedure itself was incredible. On a day, I was given local anaesthetic, and I did not feel a thing through the whole procedure. I was fully awake, and even laughed at few jokes. The nurses and Dr Nigel Hacking were absolutely amazing during the whole procedure. About twenty minutes later, it was all finished. All 15 fibroids have been successfully embolised.

I was given morphine, and send to the private room in Southampton Spire Hospital. Staff there were fantastic, helpful, encouraging. They were checking on me every few hours. It was a positive experience. I was given pain relief, morphine for every few hours, or when needed. I slept well through the night, and next day I was ready to go home.

I needed pain relief for another day or two, and then it was back to normal. Very important, that I did not even have a mark or scar from a procedure.

Every week after the embolisation, I felt how my fibroids were shrinking. After three months, I had another MRI scan and consultation with Dr Hacking. The scan clearly showed all 15 fibroids have been completely killed. The procedure was success, and I was over the moon.

Breaking the Myth: Fertility Success Post Fibroid Embolization

This happy lady bumped into me just over three years after her fibroid embolisation at St Clair Hospital in Port of Spain.
She was attending an antenatal appointment for her second pregnancy after her fibroid Embolisation.
She already had a successful pregnancy and showed me her beautiful toddler.
She had been told that she would not be able to conceive after fibroid embolisation, but this picture and her happy story proves that pregnancies and normal deliveries are indeed possible in otherwise fertil women after the embolisation procedure.
